THINKING BIG IS UN-REGRETTABLE

IN MEMORY OF KENNEDY, 1990-2016

Thinking big is un-regrettable,
so let’s make our impact unforgettable.
As we pass through this world so briefly,
may we not fade away completely.
Though our time on earth is limited,
our imprints can forever be exhibited.
Flesh decays but names needn’t disappear,
in the minds of those who hold us dear.
By touching the lives of our contemporaries,
shall we survive in their memories.
To live on beyond the world we’re bound,
we must leave it better than we found.

I wrote this as a tribute to a friend I met at university, who sadly passed away at a tender age. I call it a tribute but in reality he inspired the poem; not only because the title was his final WhatsApp status, but also with how he lived. He accomplished a great deal in his short life and set a good example to his friends (including myself) for how we should continue in ours.
He was someone to be admired. Having met him as a fun-loving student, it was a pleasure to see him grow into a mature and considerate young man. Despite not being one to seek the limelight, he stood out with his ambition to achieve the best for himself and willingness to help out others. I certainly won’t forget him and I know his impact has left a legacy on those who benefited through his charitable acts.

THE CANDLE

YOU

are the candle
that ignites passion
so fiercely in my chest.

The flickering flame
radiating rays of hope
to brighten my nightmares.

Your scent purifies
the atmosphere around
to arouse my senses.

That enduring fire
warming my nudity
without charring skin.

As your supple wax
slowly slides downwards,
it helps to solidify me.

My brightest light
on clouded nights
when the stars shy away.

A conscious departure from my usual style of poetry [because I ran out of rhymes!]. The structure and subject matter also afforded me the opportunity to be a bit visually artistic. Notice how the verses are positioned in the shape of a candle, with the “YOU” highlighted like a flame? Yes, I think I deserve some accolades for that to be honest!
Anyway, who is the “YOU” in this piece? Could it be a romantic interest, family member, friend, mentor or God himself? Well, that’s up to the reader to interpret. Essentially it comes down to whoever is your shining light in moments of darkness. This is an ode to the lights in our lives. Let’s appreciate them.

NO ONE TRULY LOVES YOU

No one truly loves you
Very harsh yet very true
The “love” that you construe
Comes with a condition or two
It is not you whom they adore
But how you help them gain more
The value you offer is at the core
Thus, their adoration is not raw
Showing love for their own sake
A charade in which many partake
All justified via give-and-take
Thinking it’s real is your mistake

No one truly loves you
We don’t truly love anyone too
Showing “love” the way we do
Only to those who bring value
When benefits no longer remain
Passion oddly doesn’t retain
Where there is little to gain
Going there, we often refrain
A kind act marred by hesitation
Is false affection under limitation
But to give without expectation
Is pure love in glorious liberation

Heart-warming title, isn’t it? [LOL]
While writing this, I didn’t want it to turn into a criticism of others but rather, a frank reflection of ourselves (including me) as people. It always seems to be the other person’s fault that we fall out or lose contact but how often do we evaluate how WE could have improved the situation?
I acknowledge that, like other, I’m not always a great friend. We seem to get caught up in our own selves and personal interests while expecting others to be there for us. Life does get in the way. Although that really isn’t a good enough reason to forsake the love we show to others. I suppose all we can do as inherently selfish creatures is to keep trying to be better. Let’s never stop trying to be more loving.

MAGIC IS IN THE MYSTERY

The magic is in the mystery
When they can’t work it out, it sparks their intrigue

They aren’t bothered at all
Once you start shining, that is when they shall call

Only show them a glimpse
Then watch as they swing towards you like chimps

Asking what, who, where, how
Very funny that they’re only showing interest now

Suddenly they know you
Being friendly and curious about places you go to

Don’t tell them anything
Because really and truly, you owe them nothing

Had they stayed close
They would already be aware of how everything goes

Let them wonder what could be
After all, the magic will forever be in the mystery!

The title of this comes from an off-the-cuff comment I made during a liquor fueled conversation with my friend while we were on holiday. It was a year before I actually wrote the piece but at the time, my friend liked the quote so much that it stuck in my mind.
Anyway, the poem itself is pretty self explanatory. As human beings, we can all be fickle when it comes to who we give our attentions to, and why and when we take an interest in particular people. I guess the “mystery” is a bit like a flame which makes us human beings similar to moths.
