Birth begins a lifelong gamble for all to face
Happiness, along with sadness, is merely a phase
Ideas inspire, perceptions change, hope gives chase
Moods shift, dreams fade, whatever the pace
Death’s determination inevitably ends the race
Thus when opportunity arises, play your ace

This short piece is what really got my juices flowing to start writing poems. I enjoy hearing people’s interpretations and how each person derives a slightly different meaning from it.
Writing it myself at the time, it was about the fact that nothing is absolutely certain in life; that nothing lasts forever nor stays in a constant state. The only guarantee is that we all meet the same fate in the end. Therefore, regardless of all the uncertainties and changes going on around us, we ought to “play our aces” at some point before we no longer have the chance to.
People have asked, “What is the ace?” That can be down to individual interpretation. For me, a person’s ace can be anything – a talent, trait or gift which can be leveraged/exploited to improve one’s circumstances.
